Tibet, known as the ‘Roof of the World', is mostly a plateau that rises from 3,962m to 5,000m above the sea level and covers a massive 1,220,000 sq km. Lhasa is the capital city of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. There are many sights in and around the city, they are:
Potala Palace One of the architectural wonders of the world, built in the 17th century to house the Dalai Lamas. The great palace with its red and white walls set on a low hill dominates the Lhasa skyline.
Jokhang Temple The golden-roofed temple is 1300 years old and one of Tibet 's holiest shrines. It was built to commemorate the marriage of the Tang princess Wen Cheng, an adopted daughter of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) to King Songtsen Gampo, and houses a pure gold statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni brought to Tibet by the princess.
Sera Monastery About four kilometres north of Lhasa, Sera Monastery was founded in 1419 and now has 300 monks in residence.
Drepung Monastery dates back to the early 15th century and lies about seven km west of Lhasa. In its time it was the largest of Tibet 's monastic towns and the largest monastery in the world.
