Mount Laoshan has been one of China's most sacred places since the days when Taoists worshipped the mountain itself, and when even emperors would make an annual pilgrimage. In those days a thousand monks lived in the monasteries on the mountain, and pilgrims thronged the paths that were dotted with pavilions, temples and stone tablets inscribed with poetry and wise sayings. Nowadays, visitors are still drawn to the mountain by its wild and rugged beauty, rocky outcrops and thick pine forests.
