Hotels in Beijing
Beijing has hotels for every budget and every taste. Whilst the Peninsula and Grand Hotels are undoubtedly amongst the finest hotels in Asia in terms of luxury and service, some travellers may prefer the quieter charms of more authentic accommodation such as that offered by the 3-star Bamboo Garden Hotel, or the reasonably-priced and convenient Jianguo Hotel.
Bamboo Garden Hotel
Within walking distance of Beijing’s Drum and Bell Towers along one of the city’s authentic hutongs, the Bamboo Garden Hotel a traditional low-rise building, supposedly once owned by an imperial eunuch, set around a courtyard shaded by bamboo and with rockeries, fountains and flowers that is a very pleasant oasis of tranquillity in the city centre. There are just 40 rooms, each furnished with satellite TV, telephone, safe, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, minibar, internet access and a balcony, and the hotel offers a western and a Chinese restaurant, bar, café, shop, business centre, currency exchange, beauty salon, massage and sauna.
Jianguo Hotel
Jianguo Hotel has a very convenient location in the diplomatic and business district of Beijing, a minute’s walk from the metro and five minutes’ walk from the Silk Market which is great for all sorts of shopping from pearls to twinsets, sunglasses and collectibles. Guests here can enjoy the indoor pool with its glass roof, the gym, or just contemplate the garden before heading to either the formal Chinese restaurant, the French restaurant, the pub, the lobby bar, café or patisserie. Rooms have cable TV, air-conditioning, minibar, safe, tea and coffee making facilities, telephone and hairdryer.
Capital Hotel
The Capital Hotel, officially 5*, enjoys a superb location on Qianmen Street East in the Wangfujing shopping district. Rooms have satellite TV, broadband connection, safe, minibar, tea/coffeemaking facilities and hairdryer. On the 20th floor is a restaurant with panoramic views over the historic centre of Beijing, by the lobby is a restaurant serving buffet meals with both Chinese and Western dishes, and there are also Sichuan and Japanese specialitiy restaurants, cafe and bar. The hotel also offers an indoor pool, gym, billiards, bowling alley and spa.
North Garden Hotel
Located right in the heart of the city, the North Garden is minutes away from Tiananmen Square and the majestic walls of the Forbidden City. Guests can walk to the flag-raising ceremony in Tiananmen, or savour unusual delicacies at the bustling Wangfujing night market. Rooms are all fitted with internet access, satellite TV, IDD/DDD telephone, and a mini-bar. The hotel has a lounge bar with sky views through its glass roof, and has both a Western and a Chinese restaurant.
Grand Hotel Beijing
One of the oldest and most renowned hotels in Beijing, the Grand Beijing has rooms overlooking the ancient Forbidden City, home for centuries to China’s Imperial family. Each of the opulent rooms is decorated with Classical Chinese style paintings and calligraphy, and furnished in the Ming and Qing style. Every room has free internet access, a flat screen LCD television, a personal fax, a safe, phones and an extensive range of complimentary bathroom products. The Grand Beijing has five different restaurants specialising in a variety of cuisines including Old Peking, Japanese and Cantonese, and two elegant bars, one of which overlooks the red roof tiles of the Forbidden City. After a hard day’s sightseeing guests can relax in the hotel swimming pool or spa. Other sights including Tiananmen Square and the colourful Wangfujing shopping street and night market are within walking distance.
Peninsula Hotel
One of Beijing’s most prestigious and well-located hotels, it is as sophisticated and luxurious as you would expect from the Peninsula group. Rooms feature big white marble bathrooms, and are furnished in soft, earthy colours, with 42-inch plasma TVs, DVD players (there is a DVD library in the lobby) and free internet access. A formal Cantonese restaurant and an Asian – International restaurant with an open kitchen serve mouthwatering food, there is a classy Lobby Bar Lounge too that serves afternoon tea and cocktails. The indoor pool has a glass roof, there is a gorgeous spa, well-equipped gym, a glass cellar holding over a thousand bottles of the finest wines, and a dramatic staircase and fountain in the lobby.
