Hotels in Hong Kong
Some of the world's greatest hotels are in Hong Kong - the Peninsula is perhaps the grandest of them all and its afternoon tea legendary - but there are better value 5-star hotels in similar locations such as the Intercontinental Grand Stanford and the Harbour Grand, and of course many perfectly adequate 4-star hotels of which we feature a selection below.
Harbour Grand Kowloon
Nestled beside Victoria Harbour in the very heart of Hong Kong stands the landmark Harbour Grand Kowloon Hotel, a luxurious urban retreat. Enjoy fabulous views of the city from the stunning glasswalled pool on the rooftop complete with jacuzzi, pool bar and sunloungers, and also on the 21st floor are the gym and spa. There are several stylish restaurants, bars and cafes, perfect for sampling local and international cuisine whilst admiring fabulous views, and a free shuttle service operates to the shops and museums of Tsim Sha Tsui. Spacious rooms boast wireless broadband access, satellite TV, minibar, safe, IDD telephone, hairdryer, tea/coffee-making facilities, and a large bay window.
Cosmopolitan Hotel
Located in the Wan Chai district on Hong Kong Island, close to the Happy Valley racecourse and within easy reach of the Peak, Stanley Market, Causeway Bay and public transport options. Rooms are contemporary and chic with a flat-screen cable TV, minibar, safe, ipod dock, broadband access, tea/ coffee-making facilities, and the showers have a massage function. The hotel restaurants serve Chinese and Italian cuisine, and breakfasts are hearty buffets. There is free wi-fi in the lobby and free shuttle buses around the Causeway Bay district including to nearby Times Square.
Peninsula Hotel
This is Hong Kong’s oldest and grandest hotel. There are 27 teas on the menu, Chinese, Japanese, French, Swiss restaurants, modern European cuisine and tapas served in another restaurant designed by Philippe Starck, a cocktail bar and poolside café, and the legendary afternoon tea is served in the lobby . Situated close to the Star Ferry in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, and with a metro station a few steps away, the Peninsula has a great location which you can appreciate from the rooftop gym and pool terrace – from here you can admire stunning views of Hong Kong Island and harbour.
Harbour Plaza 8 Degrees
The hotel is to be found close to Hong Kong’s old airport in Kowloon, and is named after the angle at which pilots descend onto the runway – the lobby is constructed accordingly. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, safe, satellite TV, telephone, air-conditioning, minibar, internet access and hairdryer, and the hotel has a business centre as well as an outdoor pool with pool bar, gym and jacuzzi. Guests can eat at the Café 8 Degrees or the Garden Terrace which serve European and oriental dishes in relaxed and informal settings.
Lan Kwai Fong Hotel
Lang Kwai Gong Hotel has been awarded various titles for ‘Best Boutique Hotel’ in Asia and Hong Kong since 2007. It is located on 33 floors of a high-rise building in the Central district but with plenty of shops especially along nearby Hollywood Road, and cafes and bars in surrounding SoHo, and it has 158 rooms which are small at around 200 sq ft but do offer iPod and CD player, 21-inch plasma TV and satellite channels, rain shower, tea and coffee making facilities, minibar, telephone, safe and hairdryer. The hotel boasts a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, business centre, gym and massage.
Intercontinental Grand Stanford Hotel
On the waterfront of Tsmin Sha Tsui East in Kowloon and with great view of Victoria Harbour which you can admire from the gorgeous rooftop pool and gym, this hotel has a convenient location close to the shopping, entertainment and business districts of the city and offers guests a free shuttle service to the Star Ferry area. The hotel also offers guests business centre and spa, rooms with the usual 5-star facilities as well as feather and down duvets and extra long pillows. Restaurants at the hotel serve popular cuisines - regional Cantonese, Italian, international buffet, and of course that Hong Kong favourite is also served in the lobby lounge – a proper English Afternoon Tea.
Kowloon Hotel
The Kowloon Hotel is part of the Harbour Plaza group of hotels, and this one is located right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui along Nathan Road, the ‘Golden Mile’, with the Star Ferry just a few minutes’ walk away and a metro station a few steps away. There is a stylish cafe in the hotel, smart bar, an international buffet restaurant overlooking Nathan Road and a Chinese restaurant. Although the hotel does not have its own pool or health club, guests at the Kowloon Hotel may use those at the YMCA opposite for a small charge. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, minibar, hairdryer, safe, satellite TV, telephone and internet access. This is a reasonably-priced and convenient hotel with good facilities for both the leisure and business traveller.
Dorsett Regency
A brand new, smart and contemporary 4-star hotel at the westernmost tip of Hong Kong Island, to the west of Victoria Peak in Kennedy Town. There are free shuttle bus services to the ferry terminal, the Central/Hong Kong station and the exhibition centre. Rooms have free wireless internet access, an Ipod docking station, tea and coffee making facilities, minibar, satellite TV, telephone, hairdryer and safe. There is an outdoor pool and pool lounge, and stylish Italian restaurant.
